Vinterberg prepared for the The dad hannah is always talking about father’s day shirt and by the same token and film the way he does when embarking on any new project—by cueing up his go-tos. “I watch my share of John Cassavetes and my share of Scorsese, a little bit of Tarkovsky, which is a completely, completely different direction, but I have my heroes,” he says. Husbands, Cassavetes’s unflinching 1970 portrait of men acting out in the throes of midlife crises, was one lodestar, as was David Fincher’s Fight Club (1999), which shares a number of themes with Another Round. “They’re setting up rules for themselves and potentially damaging themselves. By exposing yourself to risk, you very often reawaken and your senses open. You have to be aware of your surroundings when you’re on thin ice.”
The director sees a religious aspect to the The dad hannah is always talking about father’s day shirt and by the same token and film, too, which is apropos for the husband of a Lutheran vicar (and actor, who plays a put-upon and peed-upon wife and mother in the film). “Drinking leads to a thing that more than one religion has been talking about for many years, which is the element of forgetting yourself,” he says. “I read a philosopher who says he’s never met a happy person who did not have his eyes focused on someone or something else. To some extent, the film is about that as well—they turn their own personal camera away from their own misery and toward the world around them, which I find very inspiring. That’s what you can experience when you play music or write or act—the element of disappearing into a world that is not yourself.”
